Welcome to Wolves
Wolves promoted as champions

Wolverhampton Wanderers are back in the Premier League after five years in the Championship (the second level of English football).

Wolves, as they are known to their fans, confirmed their promotion with a 1-0 home win against Queens Park Rangers after a season in which they dominated the Championship.

After a 2-2 draw with Plymouth Argyle on the first day of the season they won 7 games in a row with striker Sylvan Ebanks-Blake scoring 10 goals in his first 14 games of the season.

After a slight wobble when they lost 2 games, the team, managed by Mick McCarthy won 8 of their next 9 games to confirm their place at the top of the table.

February was a nervous month for Wolves fans as they lost 3 games and drew 2 but they had enough of a lead to stay in front and strong performances in March and April saw them seal promotion with an Ebanks-Blake goal against Queens Park Rangers.

It will be Wanderers second spell in the Premier League. the first one lasted for just one season in 2003-04. They were promoted that time after a play-off victory but found the Premier League very tough. They conceded 9 goals in their first 2 games to set the tone for the season. Although the season included a memorable 1-0 win against Manchester United they finished 6 points away from safety.

The road back to the Premier League after that relegation has been long and hard for this famous club who were League Champions 3 times in the 1950s. They finished 9th and 7th in their first two seasons back in the Championship before current manager, former Sunderland boss Mick McCarthy, took over at the start of the 2006-07 season.

McCarthy reduced the size of the squad and concentrated on developing young players. This tactic led to a play-off place in 2007 and a 7th place finish in 2008 but it is in 2008/09 that McCarthy’s management paid off as Wolves have stormed back into the Barclays Premier League. This time they will be hoping to stay for longer.
